  • Why I always wonder why people play games

    2011 - 12.16

It’s not just because of the reason that you got some free time, or for relaxation, or just to get your mind of something. I want to know WHY you play games, what makes a game fun? What makes you play a game? What makes you play the game again, again and again? I mean, what makes you PLAY?

Seen my own experience, and I’m not a heavy gamer, but since I played Angry Birds incredibly often and intense, I got caught up in that game because of the reason that I just wanted to reach a high score, for satisfaction that is. The second reason was that it was a very addictive game, and you just couldn’t stop playing until you reached the next level. The third reason was that it was the game itself, the swiping, the sound design and the graphics, I thought it was fun. So the psychological part would be, satisfaction, addiction and looks of the game (so that’s taste). The fourth and fifth reason would definitely be because of free time and relaxation and to get your mind off something. So that IS an important thing after while playing games after all.

    New Gambling Games on Facebook

    2011 - 12.12

Social media is revolutionizing the games industry, and we are seeing more and more games being developed for platforms such as Facebook which integrate with the existing functions of the site to create a great experience for gamers who want to compete against and share achievements with friends. Online gambling games are particularly popular. Here are just a few of the latest games that have become popular.

Scratch and win lottery tickets have been around for a long time, but now the game has been taken online with the very first scratch ticket game tied to Facebook. Launched by Virginia Lottery, the new game – Diamond Doubler – can be entered via Facebook, with a chance to win up to $15,000. Scratcher games increase your number of entries. Alternatively, the Scratch and Win Lottery Tickets games allow players to purchase tickets with credits. Scratch off the tickets to reveal tokens that can be exchanged for virtual prizes. Credits can be earned by answering surveys and installing other Facebook apps.

Super Slot Machines are also highly popular on Facebook, with Royal Spin and the Petting Zoo slot machines some of the most frequently visited. To play, you pull the lever, which costs one credit, and you can earn tokens to exchange for Facebook prizes.

Texas Hold’Em and online roulette games are currently growing the number of players they attract on a daily basis. One of the best known games currently is Poker Blitz, a fast-paced game developed by Zynga. As you progress and develop your skills, you can earn power-ups and special items, unlocking new areas as you go. Four-leaf clovers allow players to swap their hand for significantly better ones, and financial power-ups can double the money in the pot. Tokens are required for play, but these are earned every hour that you spend in the game.

Evolution of Online Games of 2011

    2011 - 12.06

2011 has been a fantastic year for online games. From new MMORPGs such as Rift to online blackjack games, this year has not been a disappointment for gamers. Rift is becoming one of the most popular MMORPGs released this year. This game, much like World of Warcraft, has a wide and competitive community base and features a variety of unique character builds and play styles suited for everyone. Other games released this year are following suit, allowing much higher customization abilities and play styles allowing a wide range of gamers to enjoy the action. This year has been a year of fast gaming evolution and merging of genres for online games.

Many online games this year merge genres, such as Skyrim. While Skyrim is primarily a fantasy style role-playing game, it merges unique first person shooter style game play options within the game if you choose a magic or range based class. Many games this year are merging genres that were previously thought incompatible with great eloquence, which has created some very unique and satisfying games. Some games, such as Mount and Blade offer real time strategy with role playing, allowing you to create civilizations and train characters. Video game competition this year has been competitive and with steadily increasing competition between video game creators, we will certainly see some very unique online video games on the horizon.

As technology increases, as does our ability to increase both graphics and game play options. While most games of the year are strictly genre based, many games are rapidly changing to give the player a unique and fully hands on experience. We can only imagine what 2012 will bring.

Why Closure Is Important In RPGs

    2011 - 10.28

    “Congratulations, The End”

My 11 year-old mind was faced with what seemed to be an impossibility. After renting “Karnov” for the Nintendo Entertainment System and sweating through multiple and very challenging levels, I finally managed to beat the game. Considering the difficulty level, I fully expected to be treated to an end sequence fitting in length and scope to the epic adventure I had just undertaken. Perhaps a call from one of the developers. Instead, I was let down, not very gently, by those three empty words. I learned very quickly that most games leave you empty at the end.

“Karnov” wasn’t a role-playing game, but I deserved better than that. The problem is that many RPGs, even by today’s standards, are failing utterly to bring me the kind of closure needed to do justice to the characters, stories and sprawling worlds I become a part of when I immerse myself in my favorite gaming genre. Some of them don’t do much better than “Karnov”.

A good role-playing world is a place that came before, and will exist long after, my part in the story begins and ends. The attachment I feel for my characters and the joy of participating in their journeys should resonate with me not only during the adventure, but after it. I may be able to heft a sword, cast a spell and in the end, be responsible for the salvation of mankind, but I want to know that my legacy will live on.

When I finish with an experience that moved my imagination and saw 60 hours of my time taken up in pursuit of its goals, I expect to see a conclusion that doesn’t bring my fantasy world to a close, but rather to another beginning. Show my beloved characters after the big fight, let me watch how their trials affected them, and convince me that they’ll be around long after I’m gone.

Role Playing Games – Online and Offline

Role playing games are games in which you and your friends, or you alone, take the roles of other characters. These characters can be anything you set your imagination too. The concept of role playing games is not new, people have been playing them for centuries. Families play them together with a game called charades, where you act out items, and phases. Children play role playing games in the forms of 2 popular kid games: Cowboys and Indians, Cops and Robbers.

Over the last 30 years these role playing games have been just as popular, if not more popular, in the computer world. One of the first popular role playing game is called DOOM. The premise of the game was to shoot all the monsters you encountered without getting yourself killed. In this example you played the role of the shooter. Other early role playing games that you probably wouldn’t think of as role playing games include video games, such as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and even games like The Simpsons.

Online role playing games are more popular than ever with people playing World of Warcraft, Secondlife, and The Sims. There are millions of people that play just these three titles a day, with new people signing up just as fast. All three of these games are paid for games, for The Sims, you can now play a version on Facebook. World of Warcraft and Secondlife cost per month if you want to be able to use all the features of them. These 3 are so popular because they take some of the basic aspects of role playing and multiple by millions. Fantasty and Real life are 2 of the most popular genres in the role playing world, and with War of Warfare and Second Life you can be anything you want. You can be a mythical creature, such as a dragon, or a regular human being, in The Sims you are a human being and you interact with other Sims to create families and make friends. The Sims are so popular that they have their own language and dozens of different versions of the game.
